The defensive line is one of the bigger needs for the 2025 Steelers. They lack depth on the defensive line and will need to add one or two bodies to the mix before the start of the season.
The current starters right now are Cameron Heyward at defensive tackle, Keeanu Benton at nose tackle and Isaiahh Loudermilk at defensive end. They lack depth, and they lack the explosiveness that is needed to win in the defensive trenches. Heyward, although he hasn’t slowed down much given his age, is more than likely entering the final year of his career. Heyward has been one of the most underrated, under-appreciated defensive players in the league during his career. But father time comes for all of us. The Pittsburgh Steelers would be foolish to not search for the heir apparent for #97 and to not acquire depth and talent on the defensive line. Benton is a very good young nose tackle with some upside. He could be moved around the line and could even play as an edge rusher if need be. Loudermilk has been solid at times when he has been called upon. But I see him as being more of a depth player than a starter.
They have Logan Lee and the recently signed Daniel Ekuale, but those are two more players who project as depth pieces.
Luckily for Pittsburgh this defensive line class is deep in 2025. Elite prospects like Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Derrick Harmon and Walter Nolen are some of the top prospects who could hear their names called in round one. Some of those prospects I just mentioned will be gone by the time Pittsburgh picks at 21.
. I believe the term “diamond in the rough” is applicable here. Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin have the ability to be flexible with what they decide to do it pick 21. Many believe they either go quarterback or defensive line in round one, but given the aforementioned depth of the defensive line class, why would they feel the need to rush a pick? Why not trade back into the second round if you believe one of those prospects expected to go in day two could fall in your lap?. Benton is one of if not the only real young bright spot on this defensive line. But they could play this a couple of different ways. They could very easily pick a person like Kenneth Grant at 21 if he is there, or maybe they will trade a player like George Pickens to go back into the second round to grab their quarterback The picture is becoming clearer, but it still lacks true focus. The clock continues to tick, and before we know it, Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin will be on the clock.
